Each doll is coated with 3-5 layers of crystal clear lacquer, and the tallest one is signed by artist.   MORE INFO / RELATED STORY:   RUSSIAN BEAUTY What is a typical old Russian conception of woman's beauty? The ideal of a beautiful woman was considered to be a tall, strong and stately woman with red cheeks, blue eyes and blonde hair. Such women were well-represented by the renowned Russian painter, Boris Mikhailovich Kustodiev. Such woman's beauty was also taken as a starting point for original matryoshka making. In provincial Russia before the revolution the name Matryona or Matriyosha was a very popular female name. It was derived from the Latin root 'mater' which means 'mother'. This name was associated with the image of a mother of a big family who was very healthy and had a portly figure. Subsequently, it became a symbolic name and was used specially to describe brightly painted wooden dolls made in such a way that they could be taken apart to reveal smaller dolls fitting inside on another. The first nesting dolls of Sergiev Posad portrayed this special beauty: young girls dressed in Russian sarafans carrying baskets, scythes, bunches of flowers or dressed in winter short fur coats and scarves. The nesting doll before you is another great example of Russian beauty reflected in a matryoshka doll.

'Birds on the Tree' -
Dimensions: 3.6 x 4.8 x 1.6 inches (11 x 12 x 4 cm). Birds feeding their nestling on the tree (flap their wings on the swing of the string). The toy is made in a traditional style of the Bogorodskaya toy - hand cut from linden wood and hand assembled. Author: Oleg Isaev. Bogorodskaya toys are in many ways symbolic of Russia. In their majority, they depict bears (traditional Russian wild animal, if you want) at various tasks, pecking chicken and hares playing musical instruments. Bogorodskaya toys are excellent educational material for the little ones. Being very inexpensive - and yet, truly unique - they make wonderful affordable gifts. HISTORY: The history of Bogorodskaya toys starts from a legend. The story tells of a poor peasant family that lived in a small village Bogorodskoe (some 40 miles outside of Moscow; founded in the late 16th century) and had many kids. Their mother made a doll for them from cloth rags. But it lasted only a couple of days. The kids ripped it into pieces. So she wove one from straw. That one didn’t last very long either. So the woman took a piece of wood and cut a wooden toy for them, which the children called Auka. They played with it for quite a long time, but eventually got bored with it and their father took it to a fair. At the fair he met a merchant that liked the toy and ordered several hundred of them from him. Since then, the story says, most villagers became toy makers.

'Sharpei' -
Size: approx. 6.5' Metric: 16.25 cm Consists of: 5 pieces Finish: glossy (lacquer) Availability: ships within 5-10 business days Origin: Russian Federation Product Details   As all of our nesting dolls, this 'Shar Pei' one is handcrafted in the heart Russia. It was first handturned from linden wood and then handpainted by a professional nesting doll artist who specializes in animals painting. It is a typical nesting doll, and each smaller piece of the set fits into the next larger one. Each doll is coated with 3-5 layers of crystal clear lacquer, and the tallest one is signed by artist. Would make a wonderful gift to any kid, especially a growing one as it may be used as both a toy and a teaching tool.   MORE INFO / RELATED STORY:   PETS ON NESTING DOLLS The tradition of painting pets, birds and poultry on nesting dolls is, actually, as old as the nesting doll itself. The first Russian nesting doll turned by Vassily Zviozdochkin and painted by Sergey Maliutin contained 8 pieces: a girl with a black rooster was followed by a boy and then by a girl again and so on. All figurines were different from each other, the last one was a figurine of a baby wrapped in diaper. Ever since then roosters and other poultry have been often pictured on matryoshka dolls. It is important to emphasize that poultry has always been treated a 'pets' by both village and town children. Chicks and ducklings are often pictured in the hands of children being in the same nesting doll set with children holding kittens and puppies. The matryoshka doll before you is an excellent example of a 'pets nesting doll'. It will make a wonderful gift to any kid, especially a growing one as it may be used as both a toy and a teaching tool.

'Harvest' (set 4) -
Size: approx. 6.5'' Metric: 16.25 cm Consists of: 5 pieces Finish: glossy (lacquer) Availability: ships within 5-10 business days Origin: Russian Federation Product Details As all of our nesting dolls, this one is handcrafted in the heart Russia. It is handturned from linden wood and then handpainted by a professional nesting doll artist. It is a typical nesting doll, and each smaller piece of the set fits into the next larger one. Each doll is coated with 3-5 layers of crystal clear lacquer, and the largest one is signed by artist. This whole nesting doll set is dedicated to Russian harvest. Its significance if beautifully outlined below. MORE INFO / RELATED STORY: HARVESTING IN RUSSIA It is typical of Russia nowadays - just as it was centuries ago - for villagers (which are undoubtedly the majority of the country's population) to feed themselves more ''off the land'' than ''off the salary''. Salaries remain small, in many places they are being either delayed or ''paid in product'' (i.e. instead of cash you get the equivalent value of products that your plant manufactures), and rural Russians do not have much choice but grow their own fruits and vegetables, poultry and cattle - to feed themselves. Russians have always been thankful to the soil for all the ''gifts of the land'' - as they often gratefully call fruits and vegetables - that it is giving them. Harvesting, baskets of ripe fruits, berries, mushrooms and other ''gifts of the land'' have become a prominent ''theme'' of traditional nesting doll painting. The doll before you is one of the Russian ways to say ''thank you'' to the rich Russian soil.

MORE INFO / RELATED STORY: EASTER In Russia the Easter Holiday is the most important holy festival of the year, with the tradition of exchange of eggs and three kisses as symbols of Resurrection. Easter commemorates the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Eggs that are given at this time symbolize new life. Easter Observance Maslenitsa In old Russia, two months of every year was dedicated to the preparation and celebration of Easter. Like the Catholics, the Russians started the season with a festive celebration. Maslenitsa, or ''Butter Week,'' was eight fun days of stuffing, feasting, and carnival. Huge quantities of blini(small pancakes smothered in butter) were eaten at every meal. Shortly before Maslenitsa small cakes in the shape of larks were sold, representing the warmth, sky, and merrymaking that was soon to follow. Maslenitsa began eight weeks before Easter. Ice slides, booths, merry-go-rounds, jugglers, buffoons and mimes, ventriloquists, and swings made this week a carnival. There were sleigh processions, also. Businesses, schools, and public offices closed in the last days of Maslenitsa. The wealthy, decked in their finest jewels, went to dancing lunches and evening balls. Others started drinking in the morning, and were in high spirits all day. It was a festive week, similar to Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday. The Great Fast After the carnival was the Great Fast, of Lent. It was observed by everyone. No animal or fowl meat, milk, eggs, butter, or sugar was allowed. Some alternatives were mushrooms, cabbage, oil, fish and potatoes, and coffee with milk of almonds. In the eighteenth century caviar was used extensively as a replacement for butter. At the start of Lent some people bought birds and set them free as a sign of hope that God would liberate them from their sins. Public amusement, dancing, and theatrical performances were forbidded, replaced by singing, concerts, and conservation. Palm Sunday, or Verbnoe Voskresene, was a happy break in the Great Fast. Great quantities of pussy willows were cut and brought in bundles to the cities. The Thursday before Palm Sunday saw cheerful and animated exhibitions of toys and flowers. In the Palm Market in St. Petersburg, every variety of branches, bare or decorated with paper flowers or leaves, were seen. Many booths were dedicated to wax angels. Eastern sherbets, Constantinople confections, icons, and even crosses made of gingerbread were also sold. This was a festival for the children. Toy and confections of sugar were given. Wealthy uncles and godfathers gave richly decorated palm branches, with gold angels, silver leaves, and small present-filled fruits on them, to nieces and godchildren. There were hugh markets of flowers and minature toy dealers. A great procession was held on the eve of Palm Sunday to commemorate Christ's entry into Jerusalem. People carried branches and sang hymns. The priests blessed the branches. The next morning it was the universal custom for children to beat those who had not risen from their beds with the branches. Eggs played an important role in the great festival, both at the Palm Market and at Easter. A number of eggs were dyed red, which were then given to the priest and carried around for days after Easter. The egg symbolized life, hope, and the Resurrection. It was customary to give an egg to every acquaintance met. Games were played with eggs, and then hugh quantities were eaten and used in the traditional Easter bread and dessert. Many eggs were decorated, some with short remembrances of the Resurrection and others exquisitely decorated, such as the Ukrainian pisanky. Easter The Orthodox Easter usually falls later than the Catholic Easter, depending on when Passover is. The Russian Easter falls one week after Passover. In old Russia, this was the holiday, the occasion of importance. Houses were scrubbed and furniture was repaired. Elaborate preparations were made in anticipation of the Easter feast. On Good Friday, the churches were dark, but their doors were kept continually open for those devout followers to enter and kiss the wounds of the Savior. Everyone fasted this last week, and the devout took no food at all on Wednesday and from Friday until Easter eve. Toward Saturday midnight the churches filled more and more; the court gathered in full dress while governors wore their gold embroidered uniforms. The vigil Mass was read slowly until midnight, when all the candles were lit and a joyous procession burst out of the church, singing and praising Khristos Voskrese. The church was brightly illuminated, bells rang, and choirs sang. After church, everyone went out to feast. There were lambs carved of butter, sugar flags and crosses, wide arrays of cold salads, hams, veal, roasted birds, and assorted cakes on tables in every household. The Easter bread, kulich was a traditional round and cylindrical bread decorated with frosting and the letters XB, representing ''Christ is risen.'' Another traditional dish, paskha, always accompanied the kulich and was a thick sweet creamy white spread made in a special tr

It is handturned from linden wood and then handpainted by a professional nesting doll artist in the city of Semenov, Russia. It is a typical nesting doll, and each smaller piece of the set fits into the next larger one. Each doll is coated with 3-5 layers of crystal clear lacquer. MORE INFO / RELATED STORY: 'SEMENOVSKAYA' or SEMENOV CITY MATRYOSHKA 'Semenovskaya' is a Russian adjective that stands for 'that of Semenov', or - to be more precise - 'that of Semenov city', a small town in Nizhny Novgorod province that greatly contributed to matryoshka history. Olga Litvina in her article 'About Matryoshka' writes: The end of the XIXth century brought with it a real 'matryoshka boom'. To satisfy the unexpected demand, new manufacturers emerged on the market. In less than a few years, almost the whole city of Sergiev Posad was painting matryoshkas. This city was the place that had both multitudes of experienced wood turners and the excellent raw material: birch and lime trees. The painting was done by family cartels, where even children and old people took part in the process. As a rule, Russian matryoshkas depicted young ladies in Russian sarafans [peasant woman's dress] and shawls, holding baskets, flowers, bread-and-salt [traditional Russian sign of hospitality], etc. Matryoshkas gained considerable popularity abroad and in the beginning of the XXth century Russia started exporting the dolls in large quantities. Matryoshka business turned out to be so profitable that a number of other matryoshka-making centers have appeared soon after the mass export has begun. The largest were based in the city of Semenov of Nizhnii Novgorod province and in the village of Polkhov-Maidan. Moreover, this was the time when first western counterfeits appeared on the market. A number of German companies, for example, were turning and painting their own nesting dolls, selling them as Russian matryoshkas. Even though nowadays one can find matryoshkas of various unusual shapes - ball- or cone-shaped, in forms of boxes and bottle-holders - figurines imitating woman's body still remain the most popular ones. As a rule Sergiev Posad dolls are, however, wider and smaller than the Semenov-turned ones. This nesting doll is an authentic example of a Semenov style of matryoshka painting. Handmade in the city of Semenov it features the characteristic bright red flowers and traditional yellow scarves.
